One significant change from training is the need to do your own coding and other aspects of practice management. Training programs tend to go light on practice management and focus on building your clinical expertise. You may have done some coding in training, but it's not the same as in practice, Dr Levine says. In training, ultimate responsibility for billing still rests with your attendings, because your patients are treated under their name.

In addition to coding, new physicians have to deal with insurance company rules, such as getting prior authorizations and dealing with narrow coverage policies that require that certain conditions be met.
